Data collection and analysis of alternatives: Consultation Paper 2
Question 1: Is the new church school now completed and in use?
Answer: Yes, and has children from P1-P6
Question 2: How many children in total?
Answer: 814 children.
Question 3: What age range?
Answer: 7 to 13 years of age.
Question 4: How many from very poor families who would qualify for the scheme?
Answer: Not yet known but would be majority. So, we would need to set the criteria starting from the most impoverished families. If they turn out to be more than what we can afford, then, sadly some will be excluded until we have bigger funds.
Question 5: How much (english money) would it cost for meals for all of these for 1 day per week?
Answer: £20 (20.000 FRW ~ 50kg of rice) would feed 167 children per day (1 child/ 0.3 kg of rice/meal-off course a bit less but using excess to provide a cheap sauce).
So, we either have to start with a very small number of children and feed them a few times per week as shown in the table below (unable to put the table on the blog!)
So, from £20/month, 8 children would be fed 5 meals/week. As said, there is another promise for £10/month, such that 12 kids are fed 5 meals/week.
Question 6: How can we send money? Who to? How often? How much will it cost (fees)?
How can we send money? The most economical way would be to have a reliable person who has an account in UK, and who accepts that we transfer funds to his/her UK account and that he/she pays out the equivalent Rwanda Francs.
To avoid corruption, the person would pay out the equivalent Rwanda Francs before £ are transferred to his/her UK account. This is likely to work well because most rich people prefer to bank abroad.
Who to? The money would be collected by a manager (volunteer) - One or two trustworthy names are in mind.
How often? If this method works (thus not paying any transfer fee), we can send the money every month during term time.
Question 7: Is ther an alternative way whereby a small investiment feed more children instead of just 12?
Answer: Another alternative would be to invest aid money into a rice field with the parents of the beneficiary children helping with labour work.
Question 8: How many weeks are kids at school?
Answer: Will find this out (b'se the academic cycle has just been changed).
Question 9: How long does rice season last?
Answer: 4 months (ought to be checked). First season December/January and the harvest is April/May and the second season is July/August and the harvest is December/January.
Question 10: How much would come from a rice field? And this can feed how many kids?
Answer: Will find this out.
Question 11: How much would it cost to run a rice field (crops, fertilizers, lease)?
Answer: Will find this out.
