RSVP's Aims and Objectives

A. SCHOOL MEAL:

According to UNESCO, 34% of primary school kids complete full course of primary. Only 6-8% of all primary school children make it to secondary school; 3% of the population of tertiary age go to university. Also, 64.9% of the adult population are illiterate (2004 data).

Photo annotation available here. All kids at P6 level take a national test to compete for such few secondary school places. The very poor kids who may sleep hungry, wake up to go to school hungry and cannot afford school stationery and reading books are thus less likely to pass.

RSVP aims to provide 1 meal a day, Monday to Friday and, only term time, to school kids in Bugarama Pentecostal Church Primary School starting with P6 kids [Please see exception for 2007 P6 class here]. Other classes and schools to be enrolled as funds grow and as volunteers on ground show unfatiguable, unselfish and reliable involvement.

Caterers to be chosen according to the already agreed policy. A well diversified menu expected to be served for less than £0.20 per meal excluding meat.

RSVP also aims to buy reading books for P6 class such that a book is shared by 2 kids. Only books for subjects covered in the national test will be bought.

Evidence based follow up: Height/Weight along with local, regional and national exam results of enrolled kids to be monitored regularly. Likewise, absenteeism and dropping out rates to be monitored and contrasted to prior feeding and other classes and schools.

B. SCHOOL LIBRAY:
With time, RSVP aims to set up a School Lending Library.

C. TACKLING DEPENDENCY:
RSVP aims to encourage the creation of school vegetable gardens run by children under the guidance of their teachers; and ricefields’ initiatives voluntarily run by the parents of the enrolled kids.

D. TRANSPARENCY :

Photo annotation available here. RSVP publishes all its monthly bank statement for UK and Rwanda accounts. Also, to "lead not in temptation" our trusted volunteers on the ground, an Account Management Policy has been agreed .

E. ALL DONATIONS SPENT ON THE GROUND:
RSVP aims to spend 100% of all the donated money on the ground. RSVP's Voluntary Policy has already been agreed . This is consistent with cultural practices within most protestant Churches wherein people buy very expensive choir instruments, do building work etc...on voluntary basis.

F. FUTURE PLANS:
P6 kids on 2007 School Year have kindly filled up a very telling questionnaire: Clean water status, Personal hygiene before eating and after toilet, Mosquito net,Causes of absenteeism, Parents' literacy, Night time proximity with domestic animals etc...

RSVP will use answers to these and other questionnaires to develop future plans, such as health education courses, clean water supply, parents’ literacy classes etc…

E. LIMITATIONS:

RSVP will channel kids narrowly failing the national test, thus abruptly ending their education progress, into any existent vocational training programs. Other kids who failed final national test will be encouraged to continue using the lending library to keep up their literacy. Photo annotation available here

RSVP will stay in contact with kids moving into secondary school, but will channel those too poor to afford fees into any existent government or NGOs help schemes. RSVP’s very very limited bursary scheme policy is underway .

RSVP will commit only to one year and will enrol one class at a time so that, in 6 years, kids now in P1 become the beneficiaries. However, depending on results and funds, a more favourable timeline could be adopted. RSVP trusts God for provision, not a limitation but strength.
